Yesterday was Memorial Day. We went to a party at my son’s house and listened to live music, ate barbecue, and chatted with about 100 people. It was fun. But I hope in all the celebratory hooplah, we all didn’t forget the reason for the holiday…to remember those who gave the last full measure for our country. Freedom isn’t free, and as a veteran, I realize that. But I also hope our current and future leaders will be mindful, careful, and cautious before they send our young men and women into harms way.

We remember, and with grateful hearts, we say thank you.

Not in Gaston County, but 15 minutes away. Stopped by on Memorial Day to check out the new casino in Kings Mountain, and the place was rocking! It was a holiday, and it was pretty much wall to wall people, and folks were still streaming in when I left.

The casino is located at 538 Kings Mountain Blvd. and I85. They are calling this the Introductory Casino. I’ll have to say it’s an upgrade from the mobile units (trailers) they had to start. The casino has 1.350 slot machines, 36 electronic table games, 22 traditional table games, and a sports betting kiosk. They also have a 68 seat restaurant and an 18 seat bar. The restaurant has touch screen ordering, and a casual menu. I’m not much a a gambler, so I left with my wallet intact.

Wendy and Trip Mazzucco will soon be moving Downstairs Ice Cream to a new address- down the street to 111 East Main in Gastonia (next to where Miles Cafeteria used to be.) Yes, they will still be called Downstairs Ice Cream, even though they will soon have a street-side store front location.

If you haven’t tried their ice cream-you are missing out! They have about 16 flavors…all homemade and all delicious. For now, they are still downstairs at 167 West Main in Gastonia.

Hibachi Express opened this weekend at 2109 West Franklin. They are in the old Yamato’s building. Looks like they had a great grand opening-very busy-parking lot was full! They are open 7 days a week.

Just in time for summer (and baseball season), Durty Bull Brewing has a new covered patio. Actually they have had a patio, but now it’s covered. Check them out- they are at 126 South Trenton Street in Gastonia. They are right next to the ball park.

Gastonia has a new public art space

Calling all artists and non-artists alike: Gastonia’s new Community Canvas is up at the corner of Clay Street and Main Avenue, near Trenton Mill and Waterbean Coffee.

This mural space, created by the City of Gastonia’s Art Committee, is open for the public to paint, create, and add a little color to the DTG & FUSE District.

A few reminders from the posted guidelines: artwork is temporary and may be painted over, use only water-based latex paint or spray paint, take all materials and trash with you, and keep the space positive and appropriate for the public.

We may not know every rule or situation, but the main idea is simple: let’s use it, enjoy it, and help keep nice things nice.

Mount Holly has just opened two new flow mountain bike trails at Mountain Island Park. There is a new parking lot across from the Riverbend Recycling Center, and the new trails are just off the parking lot.

Spillway (Blue Line) is made for riders that are looking to improve, and feature jumps, tables, and drops. It is also fully rollable if you don’t want to get airborne.

Hydro (Green Line) is an adaptive trail, built to be enjoyable and accessible to recumbent bike and hand-cycles.
