The Hendersonville Apple Festival starts this Friday September 4th. Not in Gaston County, but it’s a cool day trip. Of course the Lincolnton Apple Festival is coming up too; it’s Saturday October 17th. All that to say fall is coming…on the calendar anyway. Today we are looking at matching a heat record set in 1957. So no fall in sight, at least for now…

What’s up with 7Brew and Cookout in Dallas?

So the Cookout is going where the old Wells Fargo was in Dallas. And yes, 7Brew is still coming too. They have resubmitted revised plans, and plans for a retaining wall…it just takes time.

And by the way, 7Brew sells every kind of fancy coffee and cooler drink imaginable, but they do not sell black or drip coffee. Not on the menu. Go figure.

Highland Tech #1 high school in Charlotte Metro-again

Gaston County’s Highland Tech is at the top of Charlotte Metro high schools again this year. As evaluated by U.S. New & World Report, Highland Tech retained the #1 ranking locally, and was #9 overall in North Carolina.

Highland School of Technology,is a magnet school in Gastonia. It had enrollment of 538 students in ninth to 12th grades, with a teacher-to-student ratio of 14:1 and a graduation rate over 95%. That led to a total score of 98.08 out of 100 points.

A full-day comprehensive high school, Highland School of Technology (HST) is Gaston County Schools’ first “school of choice.” Designed around an Academy Pathway, it features rigorous academic and technical curricula for students in grades 9-12. 

HST prepares students for entrance into quality four-year universities and two-year community college degree or certificate programs and/or entry into high-demand career pathways in the workplace.

Gaston Business Association celebrates 2 new businesses

The Gaston Business Association recently had ribbon cuttings for two new businesses.

The first is Avalon, which is a new community by D.R. Horton. They are located off of South New Hope in Gastonia at 4325 Round Table Drive. That’s near Hang Time Golf And Jia Asian Restaurant. I am liking all the King Arthur references….

Body Balance Fitness is a Personal Training studio. They are located at 3131 Union Road in Gastonia. Along with personal training, they offer group classes, assisted stretching, and recovery rooms for relaxation and recovery.

Gaston County Commissioners approve incentives for 2 new projects

We told you about two new projects on tap for Gaston County. Last week the Gaston County Commissioners approved incentives for both.

The first is a $61 million project called Project Alliance Gastonia 85. That project would bring 872,000 of industrial space, and five new industrial buildings.

A smaller project was also approved for an incentive. Called Project Atlas, the unnamed company makes, designs and distributes products that help advanced manufacturers operate their facilities. This project, should Gaston County be selected,would bring 95 jobs with an average salary of $79,710. The current average salary in Gaston County is $54,736.

Now you see it, now you don’t…

According to Steve D’Avria, between 3:15 and3:18 PM last Friday the former Gastonia YMCA was totally demolished. It’s sort of bittersweet…letting go of the old to embrace the new.

Although I was never a member there, I did take some classes as a guest. Seemed like a really cool old building with..I don’t know, substance. Now the building will exist only in pictures, but more importantly, in people’s memories.

TC’s Sip & Song coming soon

TC’s Sip & Song is coming soon to downtown Gastonia.

They are preparing to open next to Center City Crossing, creating a new destination centered around karaoke, music, and entertainment. Owner TC Cranke says his love of artists and music inspired the concept, which he describes simply as a place “for the music lovers.”

TC has been involved in the entertainment industry since 2008, when he opened his first recording studio. After several moves and setbacks over the years, he’s excited to establish a new home downtown and bring his vision to life.

The lounge will also feature an outdoor back porch area, giving guests another place to gather while they “sip and sing.” Final approvals are underway and construction on a back porch is in progress, with an opening date expected soon.
