On November 1, 2024, a new park in Gastonia opened to the public, the Walker E. Reid III Park.

Located at 1001 S. Marietta Street, this property was previously the recreation field for the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club.

Once the City of Gastonia acquired the property, a major renovation took place for citizens and visitors to enjoy.

Walker E. Reid III Park honors the legacy of Gastonia’s former Mayor. Gastonia City Council voted late 2023 to name the park in his honor. The use of grant funding and general fund dollars allowed the purchase and up-fit of the park to take place. With two regulation multipurpose fields added, the park can be utilized for multiple sporting events. As well, a walking track loop the park allows for visitors to exercise and enjoy.

One of the greatest features of this park is the all-inclusive playground. The colorful playground provides ADA-accessible options to allow for greater opportunities for those who visit the park.

Also, when visiting the Walker E. Reid III Park, visitors will be able to see the 24-foot-tall art piece titled, “Celestial Serenade”, created by Lawrence Feir. The piece was funded by the City of Gastonia Arts Committee. Come and see the Walker E. Reid III Park for yourself and enjoy this great amenity.
